Lawrence Junior Stanbrough, 84, of Ottumwa died Thursday, July 1, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Ottumwa. He was born during the July of 1936 heat wave on July 15, 1936, one of the hottest days that year. The son of Lawrence and Thelma Wonderlich Stanbrough was born at home in Ollie, Iowa. He attended country school around Farson, Hedrick, and Fremont. He graduated from Farson High School as the Valedictorian of the class of 1954. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army, he was trained as a security analyst and served until his honorable discharge in 1959. On July 6, 1958, he was united in marriage to Virginia Ann Creech at Farson, Iowa. To this union three children were born Michael, Cynthia, and Ivy. Lawrence and Virginia later divorced. Early on Lawrence worked at Ralston/Purina. In 1963, he was injured in a sprint car accident and was left disabled. Following the accident his parents moved him into their home and cared for him. In 1996 he moved to Good Samaritan Care Center in Ottumwa. Lawrence was very patriotic and was proud of his military service. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and wrenching on cars when he was able. His family includes his two children Michael (Tina) Stanbrough of Ottumwa and Ivy Saner of Ottumwa: a sister-in-law, Marge Tien of Fr. Meyers, Florida; and many other cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Cynthia Stanbrough; and a brother, Fred Stanbrough; and a son in law, Randy Saner. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 5, 2021, at 1 p.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating. Graveside military honors will be given. Burial will be in the Ollie Cemetery near Ollie. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held on Monday from 12 noon until service time at 1. Memorials may be made to the Heartland Humane Society or the Activity Department of Good Samaritan Care Center.
